Choosing the right NVR & DVR Recorders
Where your footage lives
The recorder is the second half of the camera decision. It is where retention is won or lost — and where cheap recorders quietly fail.
NVR vs DVR
- NVR — records IP cameras directly over the network. Native 4K, per-camera bitrate, and the AI person/vehicle search that makes incident review fast. The default for any new installation.
- DVR — records legacy analog cameras over coax. Choose this only to retrofit existing wiring, not for new work.
Storage: the retention math
A 4MP camera at H.265 typically writes 6–10GB per day. Eight cameras ≈ 50–80GB/day, so a 4TB drive holds 50–80 days. Always size for the retention your insurer or policy demands, then add headroom.
AI search changes everything
With person and vehicle detection indexed on the recorder, “show everyone who entered after 10pm” replaces hours of scrubbing. Every recorder we install supports event search out of the box.
What we install
We size recorders from the actual camera count and retention target, fit genuine drives, and hand over with local and remote viewing configured — then keep retention under watch on the maintenance programme.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about nvr & dvr recorders.
NVR or DVR — which do I need?
NVR for any new installation — it records IP cameras natively in 4K and unlocks AI event search. DVR only makes sense to retrofit existing analog cameras over coax instead of ripping out wiring.
How much storage do I need?
Work from retention: a 4MP camera at H.265 writes roughly 6–10GB a day. Eight cameras is about 50–80GB a day, so 4TB gives 50–80 days. We size it from your actual camera count and policy.
How many cameras can a recorder handle?
Our line-up runs from 4 channels to 16 channels. Choose the recorder to match the site — and remember PoE switches and recorder ports are separate budgets.
What is AI search?
The recorder indexes person and vehicle events, so you search by event (“everyone who entered after 10pm”) instead of scrubbing through footage frame by frame.
Can I watch from my phone?
Yes — every recorder includes a free app with remote live view, playback and event search, with role-based access for staff and managers.
